Spring Travel in Switzerland: 5 Luxury Routes Worth Booking

Spring arrives in Switzerland between March and May, and with it a particular quality of light and landscape that the country’s most celebrated routes reward generously. The snow retreats from the valleys while remaining on the high peaks. The vineyards begin to show green. Lake surfaces shift from winter grey to deep blue. Conference season begins. The first major fairs and events of the year open.

For travellers in a private limousine, this season offers five routes that are worth booking for their own sake, not merely for the destination at the end.

1. Route 1: Zurich Airport to Lucerne

Distance: 68 km Journey time: Approximately 51 minutes Season highlight: Lake Lucerne in spring clarity

The route from ZRH to Lucerne via the A14 through the canton of Zug is the most frequently booked leisure transfer in the Express Transfer network and one that rewards the season particularly well. The A14 descends through the Zug highlands before the approach to Lucerne, where the lake opens ahead and the pre-Alps appear on three sides.

In March and April, the snowline sits at approximately 1,200 to 1,500 metres, leaving the valley green while the Pilatus, Rigi, and Bürgenstock summits remain white. The light on the lake in spring has a clarity that summer haze removes. The city itself is less crowded than in peak summer, meaning the Chapel Bridge and the Old Town are navigable without the density of July and August.

A private transfer from ZRH to Lucerne delivers you directly to your lakeside hotel, to the KKL convention centre, or to any address in the city. For international guests arriving at ZRH and heading to Lucerne for the first time, it is a more composed and significantly more comfortable arrival than navigating a train change with luggage.

Lucerne’s spring programme includes the Lucerne Festival at Easter, one of Europe’s most significant classical music events. For festival guests, the KKL Lucerne is on the lakefront, and a private transfer from ZRH to the KKL entrance is 51 minutes from the arrivals hall.

See our full Zurich to Lucerne transfer page for booking details. For what to do in Lucerne on a day trip, see our Zurich to Lucerne day trip guide.

Recommended class: Comfort Sedan or Business Sedan for individuals and couples. Business Van for families with luggage.

2. Route 2: Zurich to Interlaken

Distance: 134 km Journey time: Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes Season highlight: The Bernese Oberland emerging from winter

The route from Zurich to Interlaken via the A1 to Bern and then south on the A6 is one of the most scenically rewarding transfers in the Swiss network. From Bern, the route climbs gradually through the foothills of the Bernese Oberland, and from the final approach into Interlaken, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau appear ahead to the south in a panoramic scale that photographs cannot fully prepare you for.

Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, at the entrance to the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys. In spring, the valley is extraordinarily green while the three peaks above remain fully snow-covered. This contrast, green valley floor and white 4,000-metre summits directly above, is the defining visual of the Bernese Oberland in April.

The practical argument for a private transfer on this route rather than the train is significant. Interlaken is served from Zurich by changing at Bern and Spiez, a journey of approximately 2 hours on a direct combination but involving platform changes and luggage management that a family or a couple with substantial bags finds considerably less elegant than a door-to-door limousine.

Spring is also the beginning of paragliding and outdoor activity season in Interlaken, and the hotels above the valley in Grindelwald and Wengen, accessible from the BOB narrow-gauge railway from Interlaken Ost, fill with guests arriving for the first mountain walks and early season adventure travel. A Business Van from ZRH to Interlaken for a family of five covers the full distance in one comfortable journey.

Recommended class: Business Sedan for couples and individuals. Business Van for families and groups.

3. Route 3: Zurich to Montreux via Lake Geneva

Distance: 240 km Journey time: Approximately 2 hours 40 minutes Season highlight: Lake Geneva and the Lavaux vineyards in first green

The route from Zurich to Montreux via the A1 and A9 is among the most varied in the Swiss transfer network. It begins in the urban Zurich corridor, passes through Bern and the Swiss Mittelland, descends to the Lake Geneva shore near Lausanne, and then follows the lake’s northern bank through the UNESCO-listed Lavaux wine terraces before arriving in Montreux at the lake’s eastern end.

The Lavaux stretch, from Lutry to Chexbres along the A9, runs directly above the terraced vineyards that step down to the lake in a series of walls and rows that have been worked since the 11th century. In April and May, the vines show their first leaves against the old stone walls, the lake is visible below, and the Dents du Midi across the French border rise on the southern shore. Even from a motorway, this section of the journey is exceptional.

Montreux in spring is a different city from Montreux in summer. The Montreux Jazz Festival does not begin until July, which means April and May bring significantly fewer visitors than peak season. The lake promenade, the rose garden along the quay, and the Chillon Castle a short distance east of the town are all more accessible and more pleasurable in the spring calm.

The Montreux Palace hotel and the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, both on the lakefront, are two of Switzerland’s most distinctive luxury properties. A First Class transfer from ZRH to the hotel entrance along the lake promenade is the appropriate arrival standard for these properties in any season.

Recommended class: Business Sedan for most transfers. First Class for arrivals at the Palace hotels.

4. Route 4: Zurich Airport to Andermatt

Distance: 125 km Journey time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes Season highlight: The Reuss valley and the Gotthard approach in late winter light

Andermatt has been transformed over the past decade by the Andermatt Swiss Alps resort development. The Chedi Andermatt is now one of Switzerland’s most celebrated luxury hotels. The ski area, developed and expanded significantly, connects across the Gemsstock and into the Sedrun and Disentis valleys, making Andermatt one of the most extensive ski areas in the country.

The route from ZRH to Andermatt follows the A2 south through the Reuss valley and the Gotthard corridor, climbing gradually through Amsteg and Erstfeld before arriving in Andermatt at 1,444 metres. In late winter and early spring, this route shows Switzerland at its most Alpine: the valley narrows, the rock walls rise, and the light changes as you gain altitude. It is a fundamentally different landscape from the Swiss Mittelland and Lake Geneva routes.

Spring at Andermatt means the final weeks of the ski season, typically running into April, followed by the beginning of the hiking and mountain cycling programme in May. The Chedi Andermatt is a year-round property and draws guests for the spa and the mountain environment as much as for the skiing.

The transfer from ZRH to Andermatt by private limousine is the most practical option for guests arriving on international flights. The public transport alternative, a train from ZRH to Göschenen or Andermatt via the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, involves multiple changes and takes significantly longer than the direct road transfer. For ski guests with equipment, the Business Van is essential.

For more on ski resort transfers, see our ski resort transfers page.

Recommended class: Business Sedan for the Chedi and leisure guests. Business Van for ski guests with equipment.

5. Route 5: Zurich to Basel via the Rhine

Distance: 92 km Journey time: Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes Season highlight: The Art Basel and conference season beginning

The Zurich to Basel route via the A3 is the most industrially significant transfer corridor in the Swiss network. Novartis and Roche are headquartered in Basel. Art Basel opens in June, at the end of spring. The pharmaceutical and life sciences conference calendar begins its main Swiss season in March and April.

The route itself is not the visual centrepiece of this list. The A3 through the Swiss Midlands is functional rather than spectacular. The reason this route belongs among spring’s most worthwhile transfers is the destination: Basel in spring, before the Art Basel crowds arrive, is one of the most pleasant cities in Switzerland to visit. The Rhine promenade, the Basel Minster above the river, the Kunstmuseum with one of the finest public art collections in Europe, and the compact old city of Grossbasel reward a spring visit in a way that the frenetic fair-week atmosphere does not.

For pharmaceutical executives, the spring conference season begins at the Congress Centre Basel in March, running through April and May with a sequence of medical, biotech, and life sciences events. Business Sedan transfers from ZRH to the Congress Centre or Novartis Campus are a consistent part of this season’s ground transport pattern.

For the Art Basel visitor arriving early to establish connections before the main fair opens, a private transfer from ZRH to a Basel hotel in May, before the fair-week transfer premium applies, is both more comfortable and more cost-effective than the same transfer during the fair itself. Book early.

See our Zurich to Basel transfer page for full details.

Recommended class: Business Sedan for corporate and art world transfers. Business Van for groups.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Which of these five routes is most scenic by private car? The Zurich to Montreux route along Lake Geneva is the most consistently rewarding visual journey, particularly the Lavaux vineyard section. The Zurich to Andermatt route is the most dramatic in terms of landscape change, moving from Swiss Mittelland to high Alpine valley in 90 minutes.

Is spring a good time to visit Switzerland? Spring is one of the best times to visit. Lower tourist volumes than summer, exceptional light, the contrast of green valleys and snowy peaks, and the full opening of the cultural and conference calendar make March to May a rewarding period across all five of these routes.

Can I book a return transfer on the same day for any of these routes? Yes. Same-day return transfers are bookable for all routes. For day-trip formats, a disposal hire with one vehicle and driver for the full day is the most efficient structure, particularly for the Lucerne, Interlaken, and Montreux routes.

Are ski transfers still available in spring for Andermatt? Yes. The Andermatt ski season typically runs into April. Business Van transfers with ski equipment are available throughout the season. Contact our team for equipment capacity confirmation before booking.

How far in advance should I book a spring transfer? For standard routes during March and April, 24 to 48 hours is generally sufficient. For Baselworld, Art Basel, and the Lucerne Festival at Easter, booking several weeks in advance is recommended as vehicle availability tightens significantly during these events.
